Oriel Sea Salt & Ballymaloe Gardens

Oriel Sea Salt was established at Port Oriel, Clogherhead, Co Louth in 2010 by Brian Fitzpatrick and John Delany. It extracts and harvests salt and minerals from sea water.

Oriel Sea Salt is a completely pure, fine grain sea salt harvested from the bay of Port Oriel, County Louth in Ireland. Here this ancient pure and natural resource is harvested using advanced patented technology. With 100% sustainability, we produce some of the world’s most natural marine extracts from the very source of ocean life itself, the ocean water. All our products are certified as meeting the standards of organic and sustainable production, kosher and halaal.

Oriel Sea Salt is an award-winning, 100% natural Irish sea salt. John and Brian both have pioneered an Irish sea salt that’s received national and international acclaim from cooks, chefs and food producers from Ireland all the way to the Californian coast. Oriel is the only company in Europe to hold two EU Protected Designation of Origin status (PDO) for their Mineral Sea Salt and Deep Ocean Magnesium. On a recent visit to Ballymaloe Gardens. John was invited by Darina  to give a presentation to the students at Ballymaloe Cookery School on the exceptional qualities of Oriel sea salt in cooking.

There followed a lively Q&A . For John it was a privilege to speak in this foundation  of modern Irish cooking.

O’Donnells Hand Cooked Crisps, Ed O’Donnell

We tried a range of sea salts, but the taste profile of Oriel Sea Salt was supreme, these crisps have a wonderfully addictive taste!

Darren Harris, DIT National Bakery College

We found it to be very good, I was able to reduce salt down by 25% on average without difficulties in processing. I found it to be of good flavor and it had a clean taste. That said we really liked the breads that had a high level of your sea salt also!

Domini Kemp, Itsa Food Company

This is a lovely Irish sea salt, it has better flavour and it’s actually more saltier so you can use less!
